Gymnastics is a high injury sport because of the intense demands put on the whole body. In fact, it is one of the sports with the highest injury rate for girls. Predominant injury’s occur to the joints due to the extreme pressure put on them. Injuries consist of stretched or torn ligaments and/or tendons, strained muscles and broken bones. Stress fractures can occur in the spine and other bones.
Early management of injuries is important in the prevention of re-injury and exacerbation of the current injury. Re-injury is a common problem in gymnastics. Injuries can be treated, but due to the high impact nature of gymnastics, and especially with competition training, more must be done out of the training facility to prevent as many injuries as possible, and to ensure the least amount of future chronic pain
Elite athletes make regular use of massage, chiropractic and strength training. They know that in order to stay in top notch shape, they need outside help. A sport specific strength and flexibility program should form an integral component of a gymnastics program.
