Many clients ask whether massage therapy is covered by insurance. Muscular Injury Specialist in Clarksville, Tennessee provides therapeutic, corrective, and injury rehabilitation massage that may qualify for insurance reimbursement depending on your plan. I provide detailed receipts and documentation when required for medically necessary massage therapy.

Do you accept insurance for massage therapy?


​Major Medical
: I don't accept major medical insurance at the moment. If your insurance covers massage, feel free to reach out to me and I will look into what it will take for me to be able to bill. 
 

HSA/FSA: I can accept payment for these, but you will need to understand the requirements for it to be covered. Scroll down for details.

Auto Accident claims: I don't bill auto accident claims but am looking into it. 

Using HSA or FSA for Massage Therapy

Always check with your specific plan for their requirements. You are ultimately responsible for confirming eligibility. The following information is generally necessary across the board. Massage therapy is typically an eligible expense when specific requirements are met. 
  • ​​Qualified Medical Expenses: The IRS generally considers massage therapy a qualified medical expense only when it is prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, or for the purpose of affecting any structure or function of the body. Medical expenses must be primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental disability or illness. There must be demonstratable medical reason, documented by the doctor or other healthcare provider. This means it is not covered for general relaxation or stress relief.
  • ​Medical Necessity: The massage must be prescribed by a licensed medical provider to treat a specific medical condition. 
  • Prescription: Should include
    • Order for MEDICAL MASSAGE THERAPY
    • Frequency of treatment i.e. 1x week for 8 weeks or a total of 8 sessions
    • Duration of treatment i.e. 60 or 90 minutes
    • Patients name
    • Date of issue
    • Providers details and signature 
  • Letter of medical necessity (LMN): An LMN is a document that explains the need for a specific treatment or service, providing details on how it relates to the patients medical condition. A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is often required, detailing
    • ​The patient's name and details
    • Providers information
    • Description of the medical condition​
    • The specific diagnosis
    • Justification for why massage therapy is necessary
    • The recommended type of massage therapy.
      • Ask your plan administrator if an order for a simple MEDICAL MASSAGE will suffice, or if all specific allowed therapies must be listed.
      • Medical Massage to include Myofascial Release (MFR), trigger point therapy, Corrective Bodywork Massage, Injury Rehabilitation Massage, Soft Tissue Mobilization, Stretching, MET, and the use of any necessary tools to facilitate desired results such as Gua Sha, Electric Massagers, or Cupping. 
    • Recommended frequency and duration of treatment
  • Both a prescription and LMN may be required to ensure that expenditures are recognized as qualified medical expenses and may help to facilitate reimbursement. 
  • Receipts: Detailed receipts from the massage therapist must include:
    • Providers Information
    • Patient information 
    • ​Date of service
    • Type and duration of massage provided  
    • Cost of treatment
    • Payment method
    • A notation that the services were related to LMN and/or prescription
  • ​Common conditions covered:
    • ​Chronic pain
    • Injuries
    • Post surgical recovery
    • Certain neurological conditions
  • Clients are responsible for verifying eligibility with their plan administrator. There are consequences for using your HSA/FSA without meeting the requirements. If 
    • HSA: the amount is taxed and there is a penalty.
      • ​Can be corrected to avoid tax and penalty​​​​​
    • FSA: The amount is taxed. No penalty​
      • ​Can not be corrected to avoid amount being taxed
